We live in a society and need to communicate of our well-being.

Socializing is an art. Not everyone can step out there and be a good conversationalist. There many people who are not able to hold proper conversations or participate in social gathering only because they don’t know or cannot get the hold of basics of social skills. This is not good for your overall personality. To step in outside world, you need to speak like you mean it as well as be a good listener, irrespective of whichever field you work in. Here are some basics to help you a little to socialise and enjoy gatherings:

1)      Eye-contact:

A lot of people miss this basic factor while talking or listening. They tend to look to look everywhere except in the eyes of their audience. Sometimes, to say something even words are not needed. But lack of eye contact might make the other personal feel that the topic you are talking about is unimportant. Maintaining an eye contact is a sign of respect, focus and credibility. An eye contact ensures that your listeners are carefully listening what you are saying. On the other hand, an eye contact tells the speaker that they have your full attention. A good conversation can kept going on with assurance that all the people in the conversation are focused.

Your positive vibes make people want to talk to you and to be around you.

Breaking the ice is complicated. It might be awkward too. But you need to remember that every person is a stranger to you unless and until you strike a conversation. You can begin with a formal ‘hello’ or a simple smile. You can ask them their name or make an eye contact to assure them that you would like to start a conversation with them, which also gets me to my next point.

4)      Names:

Names

Remembering names of people is important. Like when you want to call someone or if you are meet someone the second time, it is important to make them feel like you remember them. If you do not remember their name, just try asking them their full name, so they will feel like you were certainly interested in their surname. Using their names in middle of the conversation, will keep them attentive as well interested.

5)      Empathy:

Empathy

You should be responsible for what you say. You should feel empathetic towards other people. You should be careful about not to offend someone and take care that you do not hurt their feelings, directly or indirectly. Your speech represents you. So, you might want to take care of what you speak and how you speak to someone.

There will be times where most of the people in the room won’t agree with you, but you should be patient and be able to keep elaborate your point to others. You should also accept the fact that everyone may have different opinions than you. You should be able to respect everyone’s point of view and make other people comfortable enough so that they can express the difference in their point of view. There are certain norms of society. Some make sense and some don’t. It should be you, who decides what and how you behave and entertain which factors.
